Rutherford's Indian Dance Group performing at Waitakere Diwali Celebrations at Trusts Stadium on Sunday

Rutherford College's Indian Dance group received great applause after performing their dance at the Waitakere Diwali Celebration 2006 at Trusts Stadium on Sunday night. Our group was the only school group to perform at this event, performing 'Fusion of Traditional and Contemporary' in the Bollywood Segment towards the end of the programme at night.

The Indian Dance Group has performed and competed at many events this year, including the ASRutherford College student Nicholas Lee (13PA) designed and created this piece of artwork as part of the traditional Indian art exhibition being held at Waitakere Diwali Celebrations 2006B Cultural Festival, Secondary Schools Indian Dance Competition (coming 4th place overall), and at school assemblies, Fia-fia night and the recent Studio Show.

Not only did our dance group dance at the event, but the group helped out with a piece a piece of artwork as part of a traditional Indian art exhibition. The artwork submission from Rutherford College was by year 13 student Nicholas Lee (13PA), who even received a glowing comment from Prime Minister Helen Clark!

Diwali is one of the most well-known of the Indian festivals, and is often known as the "festival of lights". This year's Waitakere Diwali Celebrations at The Trusts Stadium has been organised by the Waitakere Ethnic Board.

The celebrations at the stadium began at 1pm, with plenty of stalls selling Indian food, traditional, Bollywood and folk Indian dances being performed, and much more going on.  The public fireworks was the highlight of the night.

More photos of the Diwali celebration and videos of the performance will be online soon!
