About
The school orchestra is made up of some of the school’s best musicians. At the moment the orchestra is small but is in a rebuilding stage.
Each week they get together to play a variety of music, from classical to baroque, movie soundtrack music and even jazz.
The group usually perform in the school Festival Week, orchestra competitions, assemblies, Rutherford Days and prize-giving ceremonies.
Orchestra rehearsals are every Tuesday lunchtime in Music Room 9.
history
The Rutherford College orchestra’s history began way back in 1979 when Bruce Wilson started a small orchestra with cast members from the school production Jesus Christ Superstar.
Into the early 1980s orchestra numbers continued to grow. Numbers swelled to around 60 in 1983, when the school orchestra was considered ‘one of the best school orchestras in Auckland.’ Numbers continued to hover around the fifties throughout the 1980s.
Throughout the time members of the school orchestra have enjoyed camps at various locations such as Karanga, and Snells Beach.
The late 1980s from 1984 onwards the Auckland Band and Orchestra Festival was held annually at Rutherford High School till the size of the festival outgrew the location.
1996 saw the school orchestra being conducted by Miss Geddes, the current HOD of Music at Rutherford College. In recent times the orchestra has performed regularly at orchestra festivals such as the KBB Schools Music Festival, has accompanied school productions such as Big River (1995) and Westside Story (2002), and performs at school assemblies, Rutherford Day celebrations and Prize Giving Ceremonies.
The orchestra is currently in a rebuilding stage after many of its leading musicians have progressed on to higher education.

Playing as part of an orchestra, a larger group of musicians is a good experience for any musician. It teaches you how to listen, how to play with others, how to fit in, and how to adjust your tuning to fit in with a group. Not only this but by being in the orchestra you get to meet likeminded others!
