Rutherford College Geographers had their metal tested in the annual Auckland Geography Quiz, held, appropriately enough, in the Rutherford Room at Alexandra Park. The team of Luke Sizer, Bryn Schofield and Bruno Teixeira held their own against teams from some of the top schools in Auckland. After the first two rounds they were in the top group of four but slipped a little to score the seventh highest total overall out of the twenty seven schools competing. A very creditable effort, they did us proud.

The Get to Go Challenge is a one day adventuresport competition for Year 9 and 10 students. Two teams of 8 students from Rutherford competed on August 7th, against teams from around Auckland. We started with mountainbiking around a very muddy park on the North Shore, with teams cycling hard to get the maximum number of circuits on 2 bikes per team, while other repeatedly changed tyres to get more points. We moved on to Lake Pupuke for kayaking, again aiming for the maximum number of circuits. This was made challenging by tying the two kayaks together, putting a bucket on the head of the lead kayaker and leaving the second with no paddle at all. Communication skills were really important here! Our next challenge was in Orienteering, running around Western Springs Park searching for as many markers as possible. Serious strategising was needed for success, and we enjoyed this challenge so much that many are keen to enter the secondary schools orienteering competitions next year. By now, all were tired but we had one last challenge in indoor rock climbing at Clip N Climb. The aim here was to get points from the various climbs and some of our team found a new talent! We returned home exhausted after a long day of adventure sport. One team placed 3rd overall, which was a great result. The winning team gets to compete in a week-long challenge on Great Barrier Island, so we've set our sights on that one for next year!

  • Liggins Institute Visit 08/09/08

    More images here.

A visit to Liggins took place on the 14th of Audgust by our year 13 biology students. At Liggins students did Polymerase Chain Reactions to amplify DNA and used equipment that real scientists use at Liggins at the Auckland University. They also had an exciting opportunity to talk with scientists involved in medical research.

  • 14A Football Report 02/09/08

    14A Football

The team following on from a successful grading round started the championship round away to Dilworth School. Although wasting numerous chances the team still managed to score 7 in a positive 7-1 victory. The first to Justin Park and then Simon Sekulov scored. The second half saw 5 additional goals added with Simon Sekulov completing a hat trick; Justin Park adding a second in his last game before heading home and one to Jacob Farry who again showed his eye for a goal after moving into the midfield from the centre of defence.

A win against Kristin kept the momentum going despite the poor weather. The next game away to Glendowie in very difficult conditions probably produced the performance of the season.
